Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Having missing teeth can affect your appearance and make it difficult for you to talk clearly and chew. Traditional forms of tooth replacement include bridges and dentures, but there is a newer option available — dental implants. Dental implants offer a comfortable and effective way to replace missing teeth in order to restore normal mouth function.

What Are Dental Implants?

These are posts that are placed in your jawbone. They serve as artificial roots that are designed to hold replacement teeth in place. These posts are typically made from titanium, a sturdy material that is generally safe to use. Dental implants are meant to be used by those who have one or more missing teeth. However, you can have one implant placed to replace a single missing tooth or have several placed and held together with a bridge if you have a number of missing teeth that need to be replaced.

How Is This Procedure Performed?

Your dentist will place the dental implant in your jaw, then give it time to naturally join with the surrounding tissue. After that, he or she will place an abutment on the implant, which connects the replacement tooth to the implant. Once the abutment is in place, a custom-made crown (replacement tooth) is placed on it. This crown is designed to match your natural teeth for a uniform look.

What Types Are There?

There are different types of implants available. The American Dental Association considers endosteal and subperiosteal implants safe for tooth replacement. Endosteal implants are placed in your jawbone, while subperiosteal implants include a metal frame that is placed just under the tissue in your jawbone.

What Benefits Do Implants Offer?

Dental implants provide several advantages over other forms of tooth replacement. Unlike dentures, they are permanently fixed and do not have to be removed and cleaned on a regular basis. Since they meld with your jawbone, they offer a more natural and comfortable fit than dentures and bridges. They also provide your mouth with a more natural look than dentures, so your friends and family might have no idea that you have missing teeth!

Can I Have Implants?

Almost anyone with missing teeth can have these implants placed safely. As long as you have enough tissue available in your jawbone, you should be able to have dental implants. It’s important to let your dentist know if you have a medical condition or if you take any prescription or over-the-counter medications before you receive dental implants. You should also let your dentist know if you smoke. Your dentist can let you know if you are a good candidate for these implants based on this information and your dental history.
